Because Harry's only eleven. I thought about this a lot and went back and forth a lot, and I didn't feel like it would be fair to ask an eleven-year-old to keep such a massive secret. I think the story would've ended up getting out anyway. It also serves as a warning to the other students—don't disrupt the future (well. More on that in later chapters.) If he'd been older, then yeah, I would've been okay letting him keep that secret.
And yeah. People are going to be interested. Hogwarts is a safe place, though. Ahhh. It'll be explained better later?
