Comment on Don't Tell Me (How This Game Ends)

  1. I’m either dumb or tired, because I can’t figure out exactly what Titanosaur’s/Shinji’s is upset about here.

Also wow, we’ve seemed to suddenly jump on “the world is doomed” train. (Sees author comment)… oh, well shit. I suppose that makes me one of those brainwashed to think relatively everything is fine.

Well until the apocalypse gets here, I can at least enjoy this story some more. It was nice seeing everyone’s favorite anti-hero ranger, and I was loving Naoko’s pov.

Looking forward to seeing whatever comes next… and fingers crossed we’re still here to read it.

    1. So, there's this one scene in Terror of Mechagodzilla, at the very beginning, where Katsura's eyes flash light blue and then it's like she's looking through Titanosaurus's eyes underwater. While nothing like any kind of telepathic connection between them is ever specifically confirmed, Dr. Mafune makes an offhand remark that Katsura knows Titanosaurus better than he does, and Katsura's eyes flash in a similar way later in the film when she's connected to Mechagodzilla, but this time green. Then the unofficial sequel short story (by the film's writer) does give them a specific link (although possibly through Titano getting cyborg parts from Mechagodzilla) and one of the IDW comics associates Titanosaurus with ESP specifically. So yeah, that's my tragic headcanon, that Katsura had some level of ESP and Titanosaurus was aware and connected to her mind when she died.

I mean, it makes me one of the people sitting around writing a fic instead of thinking I could do anything.

I'll be honest, for a Battra-centric fic, I feel like I've neglected the environmental side just a little, mostly because I have a lot of other, more pressing threats to worry about personally, and you'll notice I've explained Masako's link with Battra as one where environmentalism isn't the central trait, so I can focus more on Masako's compassion for other people without it being out of character (in addition to them both slowly drifting away from a pseudo-ecofascist mentality, to one with more nuance). But from everything I am hearing, I just get the impression one day I'll have to write a chapter where all the rangers, hero or villain, wherever they are in their character arcs, have to stop and watch some world-scale climate catastrophe happen. I don't mean to doom and gloom, but the state of the environment is a major thread in this story, so I feel like I need to bring it up at some point.

(and I do give myself specific rules for writing this, one of which is that the cold open can be about whatever issue I want it to be (i.e. the opening scenes in chapters 2 and 4) but the main plot of every chapter needs to be kaiju-related. Something like what's described above would be an exception, but I'm not planning on just having Masako go around fighting real world villains. Whether she likes it or not, she's getting involved in something that will lead to a monster fight)

Glad you liked Naoko's pov, that was one of those things I went back and forth on for a while. Maybe we need more of her to balance out Masako's pessimism?
