Genn and Saurfang both do get some sympathy, after a fashion; we tried to write both of them to be consistent with previous actions and iterations. In the grand scheme of things, neither have done anything massively grevious... but the plot of WoW never calls them out on their failures, and we just kind of... course corrected. I'd like to think that the crimes of the two leads aren't ignored in this; they certainly get discussed.
A key theme of Twilight Gods is about the dangers of getting trapped by your past, and the fact that we don't always get a clean resolution to our trauma. Sylvanas being denied her vengeance on Arthas, Jaina not getting to kill Garrosh - and in turn, Genn's hate of Sylvanas and Saurfang's loathing of all undead end up dooming both.
As to self-inserts... no, self-inserts aren't inherently bad. But it depends upon the purpose, and I feel like a self-insert of that kind, a Mary Sue (first human ranger, romantic implications with Sylvanas, amazingly skilled, snarky dark pretty boy, all that) placed in a position like right hand of a faction leader, is in very dubious taste - even letting go of the guy's questionable writing history. It was under said writer that Sylvanas's actions were always pushed towards stupid evil - something I kind of invoke later on when Nathanos gets called out on his actions.
