AHHH such a good start. It is so clear that Law has a LOT of problems. I can see the clear anxiety, the potential hopelessness, and the looming drug problem. Don't even get me started on his relationship with Kid you already did a great job of making me hate that bastard. He's the definition of an emotionally manipulative partner. Kid's rough, he's possessive, he clearly wants to own Law and make it so he has nothing but him. Law's smart for keeping his apartment with Bepo and it's like he sees that this shit with Kid is bad but he keeps going back.
I'm really looking forward to seeing why exactly Law chose to stay with an asshole like that. Does he like the abuse? Does he feel like he has nowhere to go? Is he too afraid of what Kid would do if he tried? Does he have so little self-worth that he thinks he deserves this? Is he afraid to be alone? There are many reasons people stay in abusive relationships and I'm sure Law has one too.
You did a great job setting up the initial plot and I look forward to seeing how Law and Luffy interact. I like how Law's a lazy genuis, he fails his classes because of his attendance, not because of his intellect. His mindset seems very... Law. So glad you ended up writing this and I love your narrative and the way you write Law's point of view. Amazing job!! :))))
Awww hearing all this from you means so much! I'm so happy you enjoyed the first chapter and seems like I was able to convey exactly what I wanted in the first chapter. Yes, Law has lots of problems and issues in this, I changed his past a lot from cannon but obviously not for a happier one, our boy is just destined to suffer in his early life :( Law's worldview in this is very skewed because of what he's gone through and you'll get one guess who's mostly to blame for that haha
In his own head, Law has very valid reasons to stay and you might get some answers to your questions from the chapters I've already posted, but there's so much more to come still. As I've been writing this, I found out that apparently I really enjoy torturing Law before making it all better. I really hope I'll be able to use this fic to show some of the reasons why it's so hard for people to get out of abusive relationships, even when they might eventually realize the relationship is not good for them. Of course, Law is a special kind of fucked up because of his past and overthinking personality.
I based the school system in this into the system in my own country and there the education is free, even for university the yearly fee for attending is like 100€ or so per year, so anyone can afford to go. Because of this, the emphasis for getting in and succeeding is more on your knowledge and attendance, the government even pays a monthly allowance for you to complete your first degree. To get to keep the money, however, there's a minimum requirement for how much your studies need to advance in a year, if you fail to meet that, they will charge you for the money they paid. Because of this system, we have many university students who do the bare minimum till they eventually get their degree and universities themselves don't usually enforce any yearly minimum requirements too strongly. Sure they try to get you to graduate as it will make them look better if their students graduate on time, but in the end, It's up to the students to make sure they complete all required courses to eventually advance and it feels like you will get unlimited chances to continue your studies later. I actually dropped out of uni during my 3rd year, before completing my bachelor's degree and I swear I kept getting invites to complete it from the university for at least 5 years after I officially quit. If I wanted to, I'm pretty sure I could still enroll again over 10 years later and pretty much continue from where I left off.
In this kind of system, I feel that depending on his circumstances, Law would either be a genius who graduates in half the required time, mostly just the requirements to get a certain amount of experience in the field slowing him down, or he would be like in this, barely getting by because he feels half the stuff required from him is pointless and he's above it all.
