    Clover not recognizing Ava could be attributed to a few things. For example, Ava in the picture is not physically the same as she is currently. She was 17 years old when she joined the military. Eight years pass and a lot of things can change in one's appearance in that time. Posture, mannerisms, opinions, etiquette, etc. As was mentioned in the most recent chapter, Ava isn't that same naive young lady anymore.

    Another reason could be dependant on the severity of Clover's amnesia. While most cases of amnesia clear up with little to no lingering issues, it is shown everlasting gaps can be torn into one's memory.

    Now as for the year this takes place in, the ambush in Wanat happened in 2009 and this is at least five and a half years after. The year this AU takes place in is somewhere between 2014 and 2015.

      Ah, that makes sense.

      You're right, we can't forget time does change a person in many ways.

      Also, I'm not sure if that was intentional, but having this story take place between 2014 and 2015 is actually kind of cool, in a meta sense.
