  1. The opening line really sets the scene; it's not only full of descriptive details, but the prose also evokes the feel of a 19th century gothic romance. There's all the excitement and expectation of a doomed carriage ride over the heath towards danger and likely death. Love the inclusion of historic details and the post-Civil War setting. The perfect set up.

When the highwaymen arrive the narration doesn't disappoint. I especially liked this part:

“Fear has exited the scene once terror arrived, and so she waits in a state of weird calm for her turn, listening to a man and his horse steadily exhale and inhale. Away in the dark trees, a fox screams.”

It really showed that fear beyond fear where the mind becomes numb and protectively disassociates.

Of course the brutal destruction of the rapist ends the chapter on the perfect cliff-hanger, posing plenty of questions and teasing the enemies to lovers relationship between Jane and Tyburn Nick (I somehow doubt she'll be wedding that Howard).

    A great first chapter!

Yeah, I somehow doubt it too, and thanks for noting the 19th century Gothic romance feel!
