As he pulls it out, he realises it’s a locket.
An odd object for his nets to have rescued - why would it be out here? It’s heavy enough to be made of cast iron and big enough that his fingertips don’t touch. It’s rusted shut and the metal is dull, probably from its exposure to the saltwater. The links of the chain are thick and clunky, and they rattle in the air.
Ladies in his village would often wear delicate silver things with blurred pictures of their husbands hidden inside. This was nothing like that.
