She shakes her head, mute, and tears start filling her eyes, rolling down her cheeks almost instantly. And he fucking gets it. That she can't voice it. That it's conflict, or perhaps regret if he's being optimistic, in liquid form that's spilling out right now. But he needs her to say it. His free hand itches with the need to reach out and wipe her tears. To touch her.
He won't. This is a path she must walk down alone. He can only encourage her to take the journey.
So he waits, silently peering at her until she breaks the quietness.
"We need booze for this conversation," she sententiously declares, averting her gaze as she yanks her wrist out of his grasp and walks past him.
