Summary
My sister loves Dr. McCoy.
We have recently realized that her love of blue-eyed, gravely-voiced, grumpy characters stems from this beloved starship doctor. We have also realized that he doesn’t get nearly as much love as he deserves. And while everyone tends to focus on the dynamic between Spock and Kirk, we think the dynamic between McCoy and Spock is a more interesting and under appreciated one. I recently started rewatching TOS with my sister and it has inspired me to write; not just a fan fiction that celebrates the dynamic, and sometimes contentious, friendship between Spock and McCoy, but one that also reimagines the original series—hopefully in a way that adds to the elements that make Star Trek so special rather than doing anything to diminish them. Each part of this series will retell an episode of TOS from the perspectives of Spock and McCoy, as well as featuring one other minor character. I will also be sticking as close to canon as possible while still allowing myself the freedom to play and experiment with these beloved characters (while doing them justice). I hope you have as much fun reading them as I have had writing them so far.Series

Summary
Dr. McCoy peered down at him with concern bright in his blue eyes.
“You wanna tell me what happened?”
“I am quite alright now, thank you, Doctor.”
“‘First officer faints on bridge for no reason’, is that what you want me to put in my medical log?”
“I did not faint.”
“I know that, Mr. Spock. Vulcans are practically incapable of fainting. Except, I don’t know that. You’re half human. I have no way of knowing how your Vulcan and human physiologies work together unless you tell me.”
“My medical file—“
“Is woefully lacking,” the doctor snapped.
Dr. McCoy had tried to broach this subject with him several times before, but Spock had always managed to brush him off. He wasn’t ready to approach this conversation again.Or, McCoy tries to help Spock who is having none of it, Spock is eventually forced to admit to himself that McCoy has actually managed to surprise him/might deserve his grudging respect, and poor Chekov has a nervous breakdown.

Summary
Dr. McCoy put out a hand to stop Spock before they entered the medbay. He had never seen the doctor look so subdued.
“I have something I want Mr. Sulu to take a look at. You too. I could use that logical mind of yours.”
Spock wondered how much self-control it had cost the doctor to admit that so candidly. Usually, Dr. McCoy was quite antagonistic when it came to matters of logic. Not that the doctor wasn’t intelligent, but he did seem to prefer making decisions based on instinct or emotion rather than pure logic, and he often chided Spock for being ‘unnaturally’ unemotional. When Spock had finally pointed out that it wasn’t unnatural for a Vulcan, McCoy had muttered something about physiology and stalked off.
Dr. McCoy continued, voice low, “Fetch him quietly please, Mr. Spock, we don’t want to cause a bigger fuss than we already have.”Or, McCoy is nervous about visiting an old beau when an accident occurs and things start to go terribly wrong. Spock offends the doctor, McCoy is put through the wringer, and Kirk learns more about his friend Bones.

Summary
McCoy found himself suddenly and forcefully shoved against the wall. His exclamation of protest died on his lips as the breath was knocked from his lungs. Spock’s grip was crushing and the look in those dark eyes as he towered over him set his blood to curdling. Had Spock finally come to take his revenge for all those petty insults and unflattering jabs? He’d never expected the Vulcan to lose his cool this spectacularly. Clearly, he was about to get far more than he’d ever bargained for.
He felt Spock’s burning hands move to close around his throat. He swallowed dryly, refusing to break eye contact with him. He told himself that he wasn’t afraid to die. If Spock was going to wring his neck he’d better hurry up and get it over with.
McCoy felt a sudden coolness as the collar of his shirt was turned out. Spock leaned forward until his nose was almost resting against the doctor’s collarbone. His breath was hot against McCoy’s skin. The doctor held absolutely still.
“Uh, Spock. What’re you doing?” he finally asked.
Or, the Enterprise encounters a strange vessel, Mr. Spock has a breakdown, Dr. McCoy takes care of everyone but himself, and Captain Kirk struggles with a very unhelpful romantic attraction.

Summary
“S’all right, Mister Spock,” McCoy said, his words slurring slightly. “Jim’s gonna be just fine.”
The first officer crouched down next to him. “And you, Doctor?”
“Damn it man, I have a name. Or am I just an occupation to you?”
Spock blinked at him owlishly. “McCoy,” he amended after a moment.
“That’s not what I meant,” the doctor grumbled, but he was too tired to care anymore. He was too tired to do anything anymore. The past three—three?—days had been more than any one should have to endure.
“Doctor—?” Spock cut himself off then swallowed once.
McCoy felt warmth on his cheek. He scrubbed the tear away with the palm of one hand. “I’m alright. Just tired is all.” He shivered once.
“And you are cold. I shall bring you a blanket.” Spock got to his feet as if relieved to have something to do. McCoy didn’t blame him. Watching other people cry has a way of making anyone feel helpless. It was his last thought as he finally drifted into sleep.Or, Hari Mudd is a woman with a vendetta, the captain gets Kirknapped, McCoy is even crankier than usual—which is saying a lot—because he can’t seem to find the time to sleep, and Spock…experiences some things—including his first human mind meld.

Summary
“Don’t tell me you’ve started believing in magic.” McCoy couldn’t help trying to ruffle the Vulcan’s feathers. He was always so stiff and proper. Even while dancing his posture was ramrod straight. It lent a kind of formal elegance to the movements—not that McCoy would ever tell him as much.
“Hardly, Doctor. But any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. Trelane must have something highly advanced in order to manufacture all of this so exactly.”
Trelane, dancing alone, led the couples in eerie but beautiful unison. Each pair, raising their right hand to the level of their eyes, touched palms with their partner, rotating and then separating again. Spock’s palm was cool and smooth against McCoy’s own gently calloused hand.
McCoy frowned. “But why humans?” he asked. “And why all of these little pantomimes—the dinner party, the dance—? Those replicas in the corridor…”
“As to that,” Mr. Spock replied, “I am still working on a theory.”
“I’m on pins and needles,” McCoy told him dryly.Or, Kirk plays a dangerous game, Spock has some childhood memories forcibly unlocked and McCoy finally gets a glimmer of insight into the Vulcan’s psyche.

Summary
Spock studied McCoy. Despite his worn and weathered look there was an air of quiet vitality about him. He possessed a spark that couldn’t be smothered even in the most dire circumstances. A grudging feeling of strange admiration filled him. An unfortunate side-effect of his current, emotional state.
The doctor’s mouth worked silently as he continuously pushed his lower lip out into a pout and then pulled it back into a slight grimace. He was intently focused on the conversation unfolding in front of them. When he flashed Spock a curious glance he realized he’d been staring at McCoy for the better part of a minute.
The doctor raised an eyebrow. “Something on my face, Mister Spock?”
He looked away. From the corner of his eye, he saw McCoy’s mouth quirk subtly, his expression one of mild amusement. He resolutely fixed his attention on the captain. Kirk was mid-sentence. Sweat beaded his brow. His hands negotiated the air, silently interceding on Spock’s behalf and emphasizing each point in the argument he made.Or, Kirk gets a pair of pointy ears, Spock runs amok, and McCoy meets Spock’s mother, his grandmother, and his ex!
