Carlton should have known to call for backups when he ran after the perp. He’s supposed to know the risks and yet, he didn’t, running head first into the wolf’s open jaw. And he paid the price for his recklessness.
When he’s finally found and brought back home again, he isn’t the same. Even if he desperately tries to be.
Shawn and Gus might not be real detectives, but they know they need to help him, no matter what it takes.
They all learn much more about themselves along the way than anyone could have ever imagined.
And they will never be the same again. But maybe that's for the better.

Shawn can very reliably tell you how many hats are in the room at a given moment. He can recreate a scene by sight or sound with perfect clarity. He can even, if pressed, tell you exactly how his current (amazing, loving, absolutely doomed) relationship is going to end. He could not in a million years explain to you how he got targeted by the area's most dangerous serial killer, but he doesn't have a million years. Yang's not interested in the long term.

Despite living under the same roof until he graduated from high school and subsequently bailed, Shawn hasn't really cohabitated with his father since he was sixteen. To someone like Jules, moving back probably doesn't seem mature at all, but growing up means not running away from the things you're afraid of, so— yeah, it's one of the most mature (and terrifying) choices he could make.
