Summary
When an Omega is in severe distress, it's obvious - they become unable to eat, their scent shifts into something achingly sweet, and their throat punches out mournful chirps, all designed to attract pack members and mates to the Omega's aid, designed for the pack to spoon-feed and carry and cuddle and coddle the Omega. This is called a drop. Since Joel's murder, Ellie's been in that state twice - once when she had Dina, Jesse, and Tommy to watch over her and take care of her as they hunted down Abby, and then again now as she hunts Abby down on her own. But now she's alone. Her pack is completely gone, Jesse dead and Dina and Tommy despising her, Ellie even being kept away from her own pup, JJ. This state has gone on for months and no help is coming as Ellie becomes borderline catatonic.
Until Abby finds Ellie at death's door, and it doesn't matter if Ellie hates her, what kind of Alpha would she be to let an Omega suffer like that? Of course she has to treat the girl who wants her dead like she were Abby's own mate, recruiting Owen and Mel to help bring the little Omega back - what else is there to do?
(And even more important a question: is that situation the truth? Or is it just a dream?)

Slow burn Ellabs set in Jackson while Ellie learns to forgive Joel.
-
Held back by Owen’s arms Abby thrashed. Her sobs echoed in the surgical suite as fellow mourning Fireflies looked on. She begged her father to stand but Dr. Anderson remained bleeding, unmoving. As she stilled, her cries caught in her throat and she forced the words out. "Who would do this?”
-
Evidently, no one could tell her. After piecing together the available information, all she knew was that she was looking for a male smuggler. Not much to go off. Someone said he came from Boston, like Marlene. Someone else said the guy was from a settlement in Jackson.
-
After joining the WLF, Abby threw herself into her training and her purpose as a soldier. To push away her guilt, every Scar she slaughtered or tortured, she saw as her father's killer. It felt like enough, until 5 years passed and she finally got a new lead, causing her to uproot her old Firefly crew to track down the smuggler.
Mostly according to video game canon, some borrowed details from the TV show. Canon diverges after Abby and Owen's fight before Jackson. -

Summary
While Smokejumpers may not exist anymore, their towers still do.
Every May through October, Jackson sends out people for extended patrol shifts. A month in a fire tower, with nothing but your stuff, a radio, and a satellite phone. Lucky for Ellie, Dina and Jesse decided to sign up when she did.
Now, it's up to the three of them to scout over the trees of Wyoming for fires, and more importantly, hordes of infected. They're the last line of defense. Anything that gets past them, gets to Jackson. Alone with her thoughts, Ellie has time to reflect, and maybe realize a few things.
