Sam knew what he was signing up for when he married a senator running for Office. He knew what Riley’s job demanded. He knew the hours, the stress, the milling, and the perpetual buzz. Living his life constantly surrounded by everything, by an entire nation.
But he had always dreamed of a quiet life. A place in the country with the man he loves, acres of greenery and trees, and flowers around them. A long winding road they could drive down on a warm Sunday afternoon. A big old farmhouse with a wraparound porch and a French kitchen. Some horses and a stable, and a little creek covered with a blanket of mist in the mornings.
He gets what he wants in the most horrible of ways.

Bookmarker's Notes
Such a beautiful story about love and loss and even more love. I am actually speechless.
I’ve always read fics where Riley has already passed away, I’ve never read one where I had to actually read and see his and Sam’s love, their relationship. It was HARD, because I knew what was coming. It had me in tears so many times but I’d read it all over again.
I came for sambucky and was met with this complicated love triangle and it’s unlike anything I’ve read. The way Sam felt like he never really had Riley, like he was never really his because of Riley’s title. The way Sam felt like he only really had him after he died, resting there in the house Riley bought for them. That’s when Sam had him all to himself.
It’s so incredibly tragic and you somehow made it so beautiful.
And maybe that’s why Sam found himself falling for Bucky, because even though he loved Riley, and Riley loved him, there was always this distance between them, and even if Sam had Riley for an evening it never lasted.
Sam found joy and comfort in Bucky, he was the person Sam spent his days with, the person that was always there. His best friend. And to me it’s completely understandable that Sam fell for him even though he didn’t mean to.
The guilt Sam had over that felt so raw and it clawed at my heart. I like that he and Bucky never actually did anything, that Sam’s thoughts about Bucky never became physical while Riley was alive, because he would never do that to Riley, no matter what. But the emotional part of it, the thoughts and feelings still being there eating at Sam. The guilt. It felt so realistic and emotional and difficult. The way you captured that is just amazing.
It truly feels like I’ve watched a movie, every scene, every conversation, it’s images in my mind.
The way you made it feel right, when Sam and Bucky finally got together, it really felt like Sam healed, and found his path again, found a way to live again and not just survive, because at one point all he was doing was just surviving and not living.
And it felt like in that last scene, when they were all congratulating Monica, it felt like if Riley could see them, he’d be happy. 🥺
You made it feel like Sam can love them both, without judgment or jealousy. When Sam greets his ashes and Bucky salutes him. I’m tearing up just thinking about that scene.
Riley will always be in his heart, no matter what. Bucky is the now, he’s the future and they’ve waited for so long. 😭
