Perhaps, when Keith first found out he would be taking Shiro's place as the pilot of the Kerberos Mission, he should have known something would go wrong. They always did when good things happened.
Perhaps, when the people closest to Katie were the farthest from her they'd ever been, she should have guessed it wasn't quite as perfect as it seemed. She'd become quite adept at detecting flaws, anomalies, and all manner of bugs.
When Shiro broke the good news to Keith, it seemed as if things were finally looking up for the kid. And for a while, that was true. But he couldn't have known what would happen on that ill-fated mission. He couldn't have prepared the mission crew for it, or made some far-fetched attempt to shield them from it. The reality of it will haunt him, regardless.
Post-Landing explosion. Yeah right.

Keith would never regret getting expelled and coming to live in his dad’s old shack.
He didn’t have to worry about food. He knew how to live off the land, how to hunt, how to ration old military supplies. He knew how to find water, how to filter it, how to survive. He had no money to his name, but he knew how to survive. He could explain all sorts of survival techniques and ways to be safe in the wild.
What he couldn’t explain was why he was currently breaking back in to the Garrison.

Two weeks had passed since Shiro died. Pilot error, the accompanying officer supplied unhelpfully as Keith watched the dispassionate reporter flash pictures of the Kerberos mission spacecraft accident, eventually settling on Shiro’s portrait. One week had passed since the funerals, where nobody looked twice at him, the scrappy orphan, huddled in the corner over the empty, decorated casket of another.
Less than five hours had passed since he’d punched Iverson, gotten expelled, hopped onto Shiro’s hoverbike, and zoomed out of the Garrison.
