“And of course my stupid ass blurts out, ‘Honey, if that’s where this phone call is going, I’m gonna need to start charging you 69 cents a minute'."
Richie holds up a finger. “And she did not laugh.”
Thankfully the crowd does and he barrels on. “So I said, ‘Well, I don’t know how clean it’ll be. But…'" Richie pauses. Counts in his head. He’d be ashamed to admit he practiced this mischievous grin in the mirror. But his compulsive need to prepare, to avoid criticism, allows nothing less. “'I have at least five minutes of material about how badly I want to bang Conan O’Brien'.”
