Their consciousness suppressed, he and his former companions become the subjects of a Fatui Harbinger's heretical experiments. Though Zhongli himself is ultimately able to suppress the virus, leading to the possibility of a cure, there is no guarantee that the Doctor would have any desire to cure them in the first place-- after all, even if he doesn't continue the experiment, he happens to have an associate who would be rather pleased to receive an exotic beast as a gift.
