Attempting to change the topic in the midst of my mental storm, I mentioned, “My parents called earlier.” I itched the shell of my ear absentmindedly.
Cold skin touched my free hand, and I realized that Sunny was gripping it. I finally looked up at him; his concerned expression made me want to hide away forever.
A drop of salt landed on the tip of my tongue, and my cheeks felt wet. The lump in my throat gave way, and I tried to speak in-between the hiccups. “T-they wouldn’t t-talk t-to me… t-they hate me now, I just know it… I h-hate th-them t-too… so much…”
“Sunny is a little shy, but he's a really good listener. I always end up venting to him when I get upset or stressed. Sometimes I feel like I'm bothering him, but he never seems to mind.”

Especially because that was the day he realized how much Basil was already like a sunflower to him.
His sun.
He will also never forget the many other flowers and (one) plant that reminds Basil of his friends, especially the one that reminds Basil of Sunny himself.

Basil shuts his eyes. When he wakes up, he’ll realize the whole thing is a dream, and that the walls are a different color, and that he’s in another city, surrounded by strangers even in his own house. He’ll be back at the start of a game he shouldn’t have played, and it would be all his fault.
But when he opens his eyes the next morning, it’s because he’s being shaken awake by a fervent hand. “Wake up!” Aubrey shouts, jostling him back and forth. “Breakfast!”
He doesn’t have the heart to tell her that there won’t be anything but cereal. When he sees her smile, bright like the sunbeams filtering through the film of dust on the windows, he can’t do anything but smile back and say okay. Because the girl pulling him through the corridor can’t be real, and yet she is, and she’s staying.
Maybe this is what permanent feels like.
