Summary
Buck wakes up to a ray of sunshine hitting his face, and the first thing he realizes is that he's not laying on his very comfortable and expensive bed but on the couch instead. The second thing he notices, after he forces his eyes open and sits up, is the naked man sleeping face-down on the rug.

Summary
“Hey, Tommy?” he calls out.
His voice ricochets off gleaming stainless steel.
Tommy’s place feels almost as empty as a tomb.
A thin trickle of fear shivers its way down Buck’s spine. His apartment feels empty, unlived in—it never feels empty. Even if Tommy isn’t physically present, there’s some familiar warmth left over, whether it’s the scent of marinara, bubbling in a pot on the stove, or the low sound of Dean Martin crooning from Tommy’s wall-mounted speakers.
Something isn’t right.

Summary
“I know it's stupid, but I hated that scar,” Tommy confesses, voice low and vulnerable. “I was used to the invisible scars, the ones that years in the army left inside of me. But that one… It was my first scar as a firefighter, and I hated it. It also scared people away, you know? It's a physical reminder of how dangerous our line of work is.”
Buck’s heart fills with warmth every time Tommy feels comfortable enough to share something about himself and trust him with it. “I get that,” he says, snuggling closer, his thumb still tracing the skin there. “I hated the scars on my leg too. It's not stupid,” he adds, pressing a kiss to his sternum.

Summary
Tommy had always thought that when the time finally came, he’d be the one who went first. Mostly because he was older, sure, but he just couldn’t fathom losing Evan. It had never been a consideration in his mind. It had always been a given that they’d ride out the golden years of their retirement together, two old men in love, graying hair and wrinkles and lives well-lived. It was the dream.
It might have been an unobtainable one, as it turns out.
Tommy stares at the jagged piece of metal that’s currently jutting out of his belly and bangs a fist on the dusty ground beneath him. When he drags in a ragged breath, he chokes on the thick plumes of dust and debris still lingering in the air from the collapse.
He’d told Evan “Forever,” and he meant it. He’s not going to let a piece of metal make a liar out of him, goddammit. He’s not.

“It’s amazing!” Buck shouted over the noise. Tommy simply nodded, feeling proud to be there, not only as part of the LGBTQIA+ community but also with the person he loved.
Buck looked at Tommy, his eyes full of love and gratitude.
“Ready?” Buck asked.
“Sure,” replied Tommy with a smile.

“Evan, would you like us to go to the parade together? Really?”
“Uh– yeah, if that's okay with you–”
“Okay? It's more than okay,” Tommy interrupts him again. “There’s this rainbow balloon arch near the park and I– I always take a picture underneath it because it's really nice. This year, though, I won't be alone in that picture.”

Buck’s dealing with Gerrard’s presence by keeping everything bottled up. Tommy helps him unwind.
Trigger warning for discussion of homophobia and mention of homophobic slur.
“Sometimes I feel like the whole world is trying to tell me who I should be and how I should act.”
“Not the whole world,” Tommy countered, cradling Evan’s face between his hands. “I want you to be exactly who you are, Evan Buckley.” -

"Try this," Buck said, sliding a glass over to Tommy. "It's one of my favorites."
Tommy took a sip. "Wow, this is amazing. What's in it?"
Buck grinned. "A little bit of this, a little bit of that. It's all about balance."
They clinked their glasses together, and Tommy felt a sense of ease settle over him. They talked about everything and nothing—about their jobs, their favorite places in the city, their relationships. As the night wore on, Tommy realized he hadn't felt this relaxed in a long time.
Tommy never left the 118th and Buck never became a firefighter. They meet in a bar and start to get along.

Summary
When Tommy stirs and starts peppering kisses all over Buck's chest, Buck chuckles and runs a finger down his spine, pressing a kiss to the top of his curls. “Are you ready to open your presents?”
“Presents? Plural? Baby, I told you–”
“You told me no presents, I know, but I wanted to surprise you,” Buck cuts him off with a kiss to his forehead. “Besides, I love buying gifts for the people I love.”
Tommy blushes and looks at him like he hangs the stars in place, and Buck will never get used to being looked at like that.

Summary
He shouldn’t be here. He’s hardly talked to Howie or Hen since he left the 118 months ago; they’ve all been so busy, settling into their new lives, trying to put their pieces into new puzzles in the hopes they’ll finally fit right. Or, at least Tommy has. Howie and Hen made the 118 work to fit around them. Tommy knew, instinctively, that no matter how much the place had changed after Gerrard, the 118 had no room for him.
And yet, he’s here. At the hospital, standing in the lobby, staring down at the text on his phone.
It’s Howie, he’s been hurt real bad Tommy. You should be here.

Summary
“It's raining,” it's the first thing Tommy says, immediately followed by another tender kiss on Buck's curls.
“Yeah, we definitely can't go hiking,” Buck comments, nearly pouting because they were looking forward to their hike today. “We've rescued one too many hikers on rainy days to think it would be a good idea.”
“You know I love hiking with you but the idea of a quiet day in while it rains outside sounds equally great,” Tommy says, stroking a hand through his curls. “We could lounge and cuddle in bed for a while, and then– I don't know, we can do whatever we want.”
