Summary
The last thing Lea saw when she closed her eyes in the Rose Garden was the corpse of the gray-haired stranger. The last thing she felt was grief. She and her mysterious companion had failed, and Romeo would pay the price just as Carlo had before. She had been living a nightmare which had finally come to its bloody, bitter end.
It must have been a nightmare. Why else would she have woken up?
Meanwhile, P awoke to a Krat even more foreign to him than the one he'd seen in Lea's time. This bright, thriving city had yet to experience the worst of its troubles. And with the Carlo of this time still alive and well, P realized he could keep it that way. Alone, it would be a difficult fight. Luckily, someone who had lived those same nightmares was just as determined to keep them from ever coming to pass.

On the outside looking in Krat was this wonderful and prosperous city thanks to the Alchemists. Like any city it has its issues. From faulty, to rouge puppets, to the Alchemist experiments getting loose or someone sick. Krat was home to those who called it home. Stella was a citizen of Krat, raised by her adopted siblings. He hadn’t seen Carlo for about a month. He wasn’t attending lessons, training sessions. Romeo wasn’t allowed to enter his father's home. He was hospitalised, he says now. Spent a couple weeks in nauseatingly sterile rooms, barely conscious on pain killers, his arm gone. Not giving signs of life. He is here now; Romeo reminds himself. Changed, tired, holding a hand of a child Romeo never saw in his life. He says it's his brother. One he either forgot to mention or was too painful to acknowledge. Weak blood, had to send the kid away to hopefully gain some strength. Romeo believes that. Maybe he shouldn’t, blinded like so many. Too focused on the flowers to see the thorns. Maybe the scent is buried too deep, maybe the thorns already infect his bones. He doesn’t mind anyway

There is no going back, there is only forward. And despite this, P finds himself waking up once again to his regular repairs. Except instead of Father, it is the brother, who was given the heart, that is fixing him. And this new brother may not have his best interests at that heart. Having his own brilliant plans in mind, P is left with a freedom he never asked for. While Carlo defies the wishes of their father to bring a new tomorrow to Krat. Both of them reached for the ‘Happily Ever After’ they could never be promised.
What follows when the masterminds are dead? When the children are left with the aftermath of a destroyed home, how do they pick up the pieces again? How do they move forward? P wishes he held the answers, and Carlo pretends to know everything.

He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a photograph. He held it gently, as if it were as fragile as thin glass, and turned it over in his hands. Three faces met his own. One a woman red of hair, eyes closed and head tilted to let the magic of the moment wash over her. One a young man, hair gold like the sun and hanging almost to his shoulders and his head turned to the side with a grin that he aimed at the woman. And the last, another man of an age with the first, hair like the black of night with a face that was a mockery of his own, or his mockery of theirs, more like.
