Having foreseen the likelihood that the former Secret Service Agent would struggle to accept her position as a rookie investigator on the agency's premier MCRT Tom worried she would try ignoring the chain of command. This was why he made it clear to the senior supervisory agent and team leader that he needed to be particularly duteous, rigorously enforcing the chain of command. to the new probationary agent, insisting there was no room for complacency. Tom already threatened to fire her, should his fears prove correct and now a month into her joining NCIS, his beta noire was coming true. What the director had failed to predict though, was that Gibbs would give her carte blanche to do so.

Nov. 23, 1992, Columbus, Ohio; A candle light vigil will be held for Buckeye Star running back, Tony DiNozzo, who was critically injured during Saturday’s game against OSU's long time rivals University of Michigan. After leading the Buckeyes to a respectable 8 out of 10 wins, DiNozzo was on his way to securing a ninth win for OSU, running a routine push to ‘gain yards’ for the Buckeyes - when he was almost simultaneously tackled by two Wolverine linebackers causing severe injury. The second tackle - striking DiNozzo as he was already tumbling from the first tackle - hit the OSU running back too low and at a twisting angle that fractured DiNozzo’s T9 vertebrae.
With that one small twist, innumerable lives are changed for better or worse, including four a world away and in Washington DC, who will feel the effects of this change but will never know his name or that he was the catalyst.

While Gibbs told him his door was always unlocked after twice refusing Tony's request to stay with him, Tony replied, "I know." He didn't respond, "Thanks Boss," and that was suggestive to me at least that he had no intention of accepting Gibbs' less than cordial invitation.
