But blue eyes finally focusing, Robbie saw not an intruder, but a lover. Mae. Bag over her shoulder and face scrunched with tears.
“It’s fine, it’s just me.” Words waterlogged, Mae dropped her purse on their skeletal excuse for a dining room table and beelined for the fridge. Maybe if she leaned into the freezer for a few minutes, she could crystallize her feelings. Calm down. And if that didn’t work, she could always stick her head in the oven.
Robbie lowered the knife, stashing it in his back pocket after a quick click. “Baby? Baby, are you cryin?”
