Friends, growing up, had been hard to come by; anything more than that was an impossible dream. The knowledge that close companionship and even intimacy would never be in the cards for him weighed him down until he discovered the beauty of science and work, and then whenever the ugly voice in his mind reared its imprudent head he’d just turn to his theories, his experiments, his plans, lock himself in his dorm and push away everything but whatever the next series of equations was that needed to be done.
