Summary
Darius Demonne met the Golden Guard when he was 20 years old and studying to master his craft. He denied the invitation to join the Emperor’s Coven initially, but agreed to help the Guard with some research. At least it’s nice to have someone appreciate his genius.
The Golden Guard didn’t know how old he was when he started a rebellion. You lose track of your age when you are killed and brought back to life over and over again. You lose everything. He didn’t want to bring anyone into his mess, but he needed the help.
(In other words, if we will never see a Darius and Mentor backstory in canon, I will make one myself.)

Even though the good days far outweighed the bad, they were still a common occurrence, and that didn’t make them any easier. The other man smiled but didn’t look at him, his eyes still rapidly tracing the pages. “Sucks to be you,” he noted.
Darius was leaning peacefully against his arm in the autumn air. They were sitting outside by a fountain by the castle, but the way the fountain was had them partially hidden, and it was very nice. It felt like the two of them were actually getting some much-needed privacy from the thick scrutiny of castle life.
