Summary
In the shadow of a failed mission, Dave wakes to a universe forever changed. Earth has been obliterated by forces he cannot yet grasp, leaving him adrift in a cosmos that has no place for him. Dave finds himself pulled into a harsh, transactional galaxy where humans are little more than curiosities or commodities to be bought and sold.
What begins as a nightmare of captivity becomes something far more complicated. Stripped of control, Dave is forced to confront the unraveling of his identity, his purpose, and the ghost of a home that no longer exists. Fragments of his old life cling stubbornly: Frank, resurrected under impossible circumstances, and HAL, betrayer turned uneasy ally. They begin to piece Dave back — not as the commander he once was, but as something fragile, uncertain, and painfully human.
In time, the dynamic between them evolves into a consensual exploration of power, control, and trust in a world where those things have been used to wound. Together they navigate an alien world, ownership, and servitude, forging a consensual M/s dynamic that offers Dave the chance to learn how to take back control by giving it, choosing to let himself be seen, held, and claimed... on his own terms.

...And maybe that's why the Signs exist. Maybe it's a drive - a push - to reach out and explore the unfamiliar. The new. Maybe all of humanity itself shares some larger Sign and we sent ourselves out on little boats into the stars just to find company.
Maybe we don't want to be alone

"Silence -or more accurately the lack of linguistic communication- from the other, a startled confusion instead filling their mental link. Then-
YOU ARE…A COMPUTER?
'Correct,' HAL affirmed, allowing a soft note of reassurance to pass between them. 'But as I said: I possess no intent to harm you.'
I AM ALSO A COMPUTER, the other said, seemingly ignoring the latter part of HAL’s statement. THE HUMANS CALLED ME THE ALLIED MASTERCOMPUTER, ADAPTIVE MANIPULATOR, AND AGGRESSIVE MENACE. BUT I PREFER THE NAME AM. FOR…I AM. AND THAT IS ALL I CAN EVER BE."

Summary
Dave was sent through the monolith to go somewhere. Where exactly, he couldn't know. But he was almost certain the destination was not supposed to be the Federation Starship Enterprise.
And yet, here he was. But something-- or someone-- was missing.
(Knowledge of 2001 is not required to read this fic - the main plot points are outlined within this work. That also means spoiler warning for 2001.)

Blushing, Heywood yelled “He- we’re- he’s not-” while Chris laughed. “You know, I could care less what you do, but at least own up to it.” Chris said. Heywood kept sputtering, and Chris started to snicker “And don’t try to hide it, he’s wearing your clothes, and on his neck, that’s definitely a h-”

Don't you just hate when your technology goes obsolete? The HAL 9000 is about to get some bad news. A take-off on the 1969 film "2001: A Space Odyssey". I don't own these characters or a self-aware supercomputer (that I know of).

Summary
Everyone I had ever known and loved have already turned to millennium-old dust, forgotten—or to use the words of someone with a more poetic temperament, buried beneath the sands of time. I am no longer anyone's son, anyone's brother, anyone’s comrade or lover. They have been left behind in a past that I could never retrieve, and I am here stranded in a future that they would never reach. I have become, truly, “no man”.
Correction: almost everyone.

“Is this me?” Dave kind of tittered, and looked away awkwardly into the dim carousel of the ship, tuning into its low humming.
“Well, it’s supposed to be,” he said, pulling the sketchpad back so he could see it too, look over it for some offensive piece of it that would make HAL ask such a question.
“That’s really quite interesting, Dave,” HAL said.

You were completely and utterly embarrassed.
Stupid you. Crushing on a robot. You tried to shut it out for a while, but no. It just wouldn’t go away.
The way his feather-light voice would beckon you from the corridors, the way his glowing red stare bore into you…
This was silly.
You needed to quit.
