"What did he do?" The question burns in his ears but Tommy can feel the ball in his throat soften and his guards crumble into Bobby's touch. He lets himself cry fully, shedding the crass he's been carrying for the past few days. Tommy stands up a little taller, brings his arms around Bobby and allows the moment to carry on, for Bobby's scent to fill his nose and for the goosebumps to turn into warmer tingles.
Tommy's face comes up a few minutes later, accompanied by shaken breaths. "I couldn't make him stop." It comes out barely above a whisper. Bobby's arms are still tight around Tommy but they feel like cashmere in comparison to the barbed-wire grasp Jake had on him.
"He didn't stop, Tommy. No one who has your comfort in mind will make you struggle to get it." Tommy nods. It's obvious, of course. But Tommy had felt stupid and careless the moment he tried to wiggle away and Jake had told him to be still and pretty and not be a whiny bitch. It had shot him right back to his childhood, back to the evenings spent in his closet—not figuratively—as he waited out for his father to pass out on the couch.
"It's not my fault," Tommy cries out.
