Hayward hissed with surprise and fear, his eyes darting around the room. Paige almost moaned aloud, but quickly clamped her lips shut. It did not appear that anyone had overheard them. The Ceaseless Watcher had no worshippers and took no sacrifices. It dwelt in the Panopticon, and hated the sound of its name. It was not to be known.
Generations after the Ceaseless Watcher emerged, the people of this world have learned to live with the Fears, worshipping them as gods and feeding them with terror. When Carpenter finds a way to escape, she resolves to set others free as well.

Despite himself, Martin grins a bit at the look on Jon's face, but he remembers the point he's trying to make and sobers quickly. "Face it, Jon, it took almost two years of crisis and trauma to even make us compatible. And that sucks. But here we are." His gaze drops to his hands as he says quietly, "And I don’t want it to be for nothing. I won’t let it."
There's a pause, then Jon says, "That’s very sweet of you, Martin." A short pause, then he amends, "Sort of."
Martin snorts.
"But I don't agree," Jon continues. Martin starts to protest, but Jon waves his hand. "Yes, yes, I know, I heard you—two years of trauma, and Angela. I'm not saying we would've just…fallen together had nothing changed."
