It’s not a strange thing, Crystal supposes, to lose faith in your relationship. To lose faith in someone that you believed would be the answer to all your problems. That’s how most break-ups go.
She wouldn’t know. She doesn’t remember shit.
But right here, right now, in this graveyard, watching the shrapnel of her heart hit Charles, watching him reveal that he is just as messy, just as bleeding, just as capable of judgement and self-preservation and nastiness as she is-
It’s hard not to have some part of her belief in him chipped away.

Summary
She just…she’d wanted to believe that love was real. In all her stories, love was the thing that would set everything to rights, the thing that completed people, the thing that defined and redeemed you and changed the world for the better. Maxine’s letters were so romantic, and if this were a story, she may have been the dark and complicated love interest, but it never would have been in a way that actually hurt Jenny. Maybe there would have been pitfalls along the way, drama and danger to heighten the stakes, but it all would have worked out in the end.
Maxine wouldn’t have tried to kill Jenny. Jenny wouldn’t have ended up traumatized. Maxine wouldn’t have left the shop with a hole through her skull, carried out in a body bag.
Niko has always known that her stories weren’t exactly true, that their realities were heightened and polished, but she wanted to believe in them so much that she let herself ignore all the ways that things went wrong in real life. Now, someone is dead and someone else will never forgive her.

Charles stilled. “Well—maybe. I think I was always a little bit different from other guys, to be honest,” he said, like he was confessing something. “My old mates were definitely cut from the same cloth, though.”
“Oh,” Niko realized. “Is that why you want them to be good guys? They remind you of your friends?”
“Er…” Charles trailed off. He squished the ball of PlayDoh in his hands. Gray showed between his fingers. “Not exactly. My old mates weren’t, ah. Well. They weren’t good guys, in the end. I mean, Brad and Hunter do remind me of them. A lot, actually. But it’s more like, it would be really nice to know that guys like James or Pete could be nice.” He contemplated the dough in his hands with a small frown. “I just wonder, if those guys had been born a little later, maybe they would have turned out better? Maybe we might have been alright.”
Niko followed his gaze. Charles seemed to be getting PlayDoh residue on his fingers. They were turning gray, now, too.
“Were your friends nice to you?” Niko asked, suddenly worried.
Charles met her eyes, but he had a faraway look on his face. “Sometimes,” he said.

Charles faltered at the Night Nurse’s words. His shoulders loosened; his cricket bat descended out of its ready position. Stood behind him, Edwin could not see his expression, but he could imagine it well enough: a slack expression, morphing slowly into wide-eyed wonder. Charles took a dazed step toward her.
