Summary
“Captain.” She aimed a heavy wrench for his knee, and made contact with hard bone. This time, she was rewarded with a yelp as Kid’s hand moved to defend the joint, jostling his goggles from their resting place and undoing all the work he’d been doing up until then. Her own goggles sat on her head, nestled in her hair, as she had finished working on them nearly half an hour ago.
“What the hell?!” Kid snarled, turning to face her. Dive preened under his gaze, even though it promised death, and/or gruesome dismemberment. She brought her chair closer, rolling along the floor as she used the workbench to pull herself. She was bored, and Kid was taking too long—and doing it wrong, for good measure. She’d help, they’d finish faster, and then she could take up all his attention without worry.

Summary
None of them had families—no one did. No one had mothers, fathers, siblings, cousins—the words didn’t exist. There were only enemies and people you kept alive to stay alive. Wire knew all of this very well. It stayed stuck in the core of his being, despite the years that had passed since he’d been in that horrid place. He knew it lingered, the fear never truly left one’s bones. It was unavoidable.
The most important part, however, no matter who you were or how well off you might be, was food. There was never enough. Everyone was starving, on that barren hunk of rock that scared off all traders and removed themselves from any routes, and with starvation came weakness. Weakness meant death.
Food meant power.

Inches from her goal, however, she was halted in her tracks. Harsh, heavy steel fingers wrapped around both of her wrists and forced them to grind together, bringing only more devastation at her failure. She was pretty sure the most impressive pout she’d ever had was spread across her face—any other man, or woman, for that matter, would have crumpled instantly. But not Eustass Kid. He was stronger than her petty wiles.

“Hey, Captain,” he called, a bit of a distance away so Kid wouldn’t turn on him out of surprise, “Maybe you should take a break. Wanna sit with me for a while?” He jerked his thumb over his shoulder to point at a nice sandy patch shadowed by a big, overhanging palm tree.
Kid whipped around with a growl, lined eyes and hairless brows pulling down into a harsh frown. “What?!” he demanded, painted lips twisting into a snarl.
Damn, his captain was pretty.

Another hum, before he could describe the placement of its stars. Killer turned his head to look at his captain, a question on his lips, only to be frozen in its tracks when he saw Kid looking at him. Red eyes on him, only him, instead of the stars and the sky he had been appreciating.
Breath caught in his throat, it took a moment before Killer could force words past the lump. “Captain,” he started, half-strangled, watching as those red, red eyes drifted down to his lips.
