Summary
“I thought I might join you, if you weren’t opposed.”
Ray can’t think. Or he can, but the train’s gone off-rail and in loops. His lungs scream, and he remembers he has to exhale eventually– a plume of smoke rising between them.
“Yeah… yeah, that sounds fine."
He gets a smile, a real smile, not the one in the club; that’s pretty and polite but restrained (his customer service face, Ray realizes). This one’s big and wide, with a sharp little snaggletooth on one side.
“Thank you kindly.”

Ray’s eventual exhalation explodes from his chest like a bullet, his sigh caught in the interim. “Yeah…yeah, that sounds fine.”
The smile that breaks on his face is one he rarely indulges, his cheeks ache at the strain, but Ben can’t help it. Ray wants to spend time with him.
“Thank you kindly.”
“Anytime.” Ray shrugs, his affect bashful for a moment, sucking a fresh drag in the resounding silence.
