Following Endgame, the Sorcerers scramble to repair the damage done to reality. Stephen works himself to the bone, knowing he will die. He attends Tony’s funeral and offers himself up as whipping boy to tank everyone’s pain. By the weeks end, the sorcerers find themselves unable to patch up a massive soul rift in reality. Stephen free falls into the breach and gives himself up to Soul in return for letting him patch up the damage. Tired of holding his dwindling sanity together, Stephen finishes and lets go. Wong sees his body fall back out of the rift as it closes.
Meanwhile, in Stephen’s mind, he hears voices. He builds a headspace to investigate and find Tony, Loki, Natasha, and Gamora waiting for him. They bully him and he retreats into himself, worried that he has suffered a psychological break. Tony investigates and finds that Stephen has planned out his suicide once he is healed enough to manage it because he thinks he has gone insane.
Wong finds a spell that will show the souls and prove Stephen isn’t losing it, and when the Masters call him in to be tried for breaking his Oath concerning the Time Stone, Wong has them cast the spell. Finally believing that the 4 are real, Stephen commits to saving them, and the 4 defend him to the Masters. He locates the Guardians, who have found young Gamora. Stephen finds likenesses of himself painted all over alternate planets across the galaxy. When in proximity to her living self, Gamora’s soul forcefully yanks itself from Stephen, leaving a harpoon hole in his side.
While recovering, Loki sends Thor off to do research. Natasha has a clone in cryo they can use. As it turns out, Stephen is a master of Soul stone magic because he spent 5 years holding all the Vanished together—protecting them from the venerable forces of the universe. Still suffering from the lingering effects of what happened, the Vanished are plagued The Fear, but remember “The Protector” who saved them. As penance to the Soul Stone, Stephen passes out enchanted rings. These rings heal The Fear and duplicate when in proximity to others who with It. Taking Gamora with them, the Guardians pledge to spread the rings to the members of Stephen’s cult.
Stephen gains Clint’s assistance by healing Cooper and Laura of The Fear, and Clint locates Natasha’s clone. They break in, but things go wrong and Stephen is tortured and molested. The molestation is the final straw and all the grief and trauma that Stephen was bottling releases, destroying his inner mind house. Natasha succeeds in returning to her body and Stephen goes Inside to protect Loki and Tony from the demons of his past lives. Upon returning, Wong is furious with Stephen for constantly self-sacrificing.
Tony, growing increasingly restless, visits Morgan and Pepper via astral projection. This breaks him and he lashes out, injuring Stephen further. Thor returns, and they go to the Yggdrasil, where Loki can regain his body. They (literally)seduce a world-sized dragon and face a trial of their biggest fears, during which Stephen is “killed” and Loki’s tether is severed. On their way out, Loki, Thor, and Tony snatch up some Asguardian souls and meet back up with the near-dead Stephen and the Norns. Thor uses his power to revive Frigga(using her soul thing), who heals Stephen.
Stephen realizes he has to invent his own ritual to bring Tony back, and calls upon the Vishanti to do so. The ritual takes months, culminating in 24 hours of solo nonstop magic and fighting, but Stephen eeks out a win and Tony is placed in his new body. The tether remains so that Stephen doesn’t die, but it was shifted into an umbilical chord. Stephen moves in with Pepper, Tony, and Morgan, and they plan out their recovery. Stephen finally starts healing, thanks to Morgan, and they have a wonderful Christmas. The Avengers are educated about the situation using a BARF mastercut of memories.
Two days before the official press conference announcing Tony’s return, the Kree army attacks with hosts of millions. Earth rallies but cannot win against such odds. Stephen, remembering his intrinsic soul connection, exploits his Cult and hijacks EVERYONE’S soul to scold them for attacking HIS planet after all HE did for THEM. The attack ends immediately, but the machinery auto-fires. Stephen uses his last power to resurrect Morgan for Tony and self-destructs. Loki and Tony jump into the death ray’s path and absorb the power into the Hearthstone(which Loki uses to restore Asguard). Loki planned for Stephen’s “signature move” of self sacrifice and froze him upon signs of dying.
A press conference is held, where Tony explains everything. There’s nearly a riot when people think The Protector died, but Stephen shows up to calm everyone, with Loki tying up loose ends press-wise. Stephen is reluctantly crowned Sorcerer Supreme, makes a pact with the Time Stone too, and officially moves into the Lakehouse for good.

Summary
Thor resurrects Loki nearly six years after his death at Thanos's hands. It's not that Loki isn't grateful. It's not. Really. But whatever magic made him Asgardian is gone, and now Loki is Jotun. It's his nightmare. It makes him wish, just a little, that he was still dead.
Loki and Thor try everything they can think of, but there doesn't seem to be any magic, or spell, or ritual that will make Loki Asgardian again.
So Loki takes a chance: he goes to New York, and he asks for Stephen Strange's help. Strange is a sorcerer, after all. If anyone on Earth can help, it's him—even if Loki doesn't expect he'll be able to.
He doesn't expect how much he likes Strange, either. He doesn't expect to enjoy spending time at the Sanctum. He doesn't expect it to be Strange who makes him stop wishing, even if it's just a little, that he was still dead.
