Colin takes a different tactic when trying to get to know Mare, both for the case and... eventually his own prerogative. Once he gets past the hard shell of her entire personally, it's plain to see that there's a hell of a lot to like about her. Maybe she'll start to feel the same way, too.
CHAPTER FIVE: “Before we find your friends, we should have a story.” Mare told him.
He leant toward her to listen above the roar of the bar music, quizzical. “A story?”
She sighed fiercely, seeing that he wasn’t getting it. She glanced behind her, setting her unfinished beer on the counter and startling him with the arm she slid around his waist, eyeing him in a very specific way. She was only drawing on all of the shit she would have done if she’d ever used a man to make Frank jealous at one of their reunions.
“Are you really going to make me say it?” She asked, watching him unflinchingly.

She could recall free-falling drinks passed between her and Colin, even more so with him as he tried to drown out his first kill in the field. She could vaguely recall accepting a haughty challenge from a pair of guys wanting to make a quick buck off of some amateur, drunken, unsuspecting pool players. She could recall her mediocre shots, relics of a bar hopping past that were years behind her. She could recall Colin making out like he was just as shitty or out of practice until he finished them off and won with one mind blowing trick shot that made her look at him like he was completely different person. She could recall cackling, fueled by too many victories in a row and granting him a winning kiss that was one part open-mouthed and one part beyond inebriated and heady.

“Mare, come on. I need a shirt,” the voice insisted, still laughing.
A hard toss landed with a thunk against his chest, making the man laugh even more, before he turned and rolled it up, intending on throwing it on. Halfway up his arms, he turned and made eye contact with Siobhan, a startled look on his face but a smile quickly following once he realized who it was hiding in the dark.
Oh my god, Siobhan thought. It’s her partner.
“Mare,” he shouted, turning his head to call over his shoulder.
“What? Was that not the right shirt?” She heard her retort back.
“Come here,” he insisted, corner of his lip still upturned, keeping a conspiratorial eye on Siobhan this time.
Disgruntled, her mom appeared in the frame, in a robe and with tied back wet hair, suddenly there and crowding Colin. “What now?” Her eyes were intent on him until they followed where his gaze was and her eyes widened almost comedically wide.
Siobhan revealed herself fully, a laughing smile on her face. Oh this was so much better than she expected it to be.

She disappears into the bathroom, returning with hair ties in her hand, watching his face go from confusion to realization. She stifles a laugh as she sits down next to him, his eyes glued to the hair ties. "No way, Mare."
"Come here." She orders him, voice harsher this time. Zabel hesitantly follows her orders, not feeling her idea, but still giving in.

She grabs a beer from the fridge instead, downing a few gulps down her throat before adjusting herself between Zabel's legs, who was leaning against the counter.
He takes one last sip and puts the glass on the countertop, wrapping his arms around her waist, pulling her close, looking into her blue eyes, and seeing his whole world.

“You wanna tell me what this is?” Colin interrupted.
Her brow flattened against her eyes at the question, playing as dumb as she believably could. “What do you mean what this is? You babysat. I’m trying to feed you. I’m offering you a beer and an eternal favor. Give me a break.”
“Come on, Mare. You know what I’m talking about.” He prodded, voice layered in a disappointment that she didn’t want to have to acknowledge.
“We’re friends, Zabel. You did me a favor.”
“Alright, sure.” He nodded, sitting back against the counter like she had while taking a swig.
“What the hell are you getting at?” She demanded, a frown on her face, determined to blow through his argument.
The next drink of his beer was taken a lot more aggressively, his hand coming out to set the near empty bottle on the counter with a loud clatter. “I kissed you, shit hit the fan with Potts, I went back to county, and you never said anything. Not a word, not a text. You never even bothered to call until tonight just because you needed me to watch your grandson.”
