Summary
The impact doesn’t feel any harder than it should, but maybe that’s the real problem, Sonny realizes after a second: the impact doesn’t feel at all. He doesn’t feel at all, and that scares him——but it’s a kind of fear that should be pent up in his chest, and isn’t. He can hear clapping, see the pre-sunset lit up above him, but when he moves to sit up, he can’t.
He can’t even feel his legs to try. Can’t feel his arms, can’t feel anything, except for a dull pain at the base of his skull.

The instant that the rocket car hits the ground, he knows something is wrong.
More accurately, the instant before the rocket car hits the ground, he’s struck with the knowledge that something is certainly, near absolutely, going to break. The instant feels more like a second, maybe like more than a second, like a freeze frame, a cliffhanger, and then everything snaps back into harsh motion, and Sonny is slammed by about ten Gs of force, and about a ten on the pain scale.
