James nodded in acknowledgement, unsure of where Sirius was going with his response.
"But I don't." Sirius stared right at him with a solemn expression that felt completely out of character. "He needs someone who won't rise to his bait. I really like you James, honestly I do. I think that we could grow to be best friends, given the time. And I think you could be good for my brother, but only if you can promise me—and him—that you'll never raise your voice at him again. Our parents did that enough to last a lifetime. You can't feed into his bullshit when he gets like that."
He groaned, pressing two fingers to his temple to relieve the beginnings of a headache. "I don't know how to just… take it."
"You misunderstand. I'm not telling you to just be his punching bag. Reg is… He's been doing better since he's been with you. He really has. Before his attempt, I felt like I had already lost my brother." ] PROTECTIVE SIRIUS -

There was another student here.
Tom recognized him vaguely—while transfer students were not necessarily uncommon due to the war, they were rare enough to at least make an impression. This particular transfer student was in his year, sorted into Ravenclaw after an impressively long hat stall. He looked like he might be descended from the Potter line, but he did not share the surname so his lineage was of no particular interest to Tom. Nothing about him was of particular interest to Tom, in fact, and yet here he stood, holding the book that Tom had come here to find.
It would be a good time to turn away. The Restricted Section was restricted for a reason—only books documenting extremely dangerous or extremely advanced magic were stored here.
Tom’s feet, however, suddenly felt as if they were made of lead. It wasn’t magic keeping him tied down, but something far more mysterious like curiosity or even fate. In any case, the delay was all it took for the Ravenclaw to lift his chin and meet Tom’s eyes.
This Ravenclaw, Tom realized, had eyes as blindingly green as the Killing Curse.

Sirius studied Remus’ face. He was curious what he thought of all of this, the only one of them who didn’t have a mark– theoretically– and the only one with a muggle parent. Muggles didn’t get marks, he knew. If Remus’ parents were soulmates, then they wouldn’t know it. He wondered if there was a way to tell, though. If they could just feel it, somehow, even without the help of some magical fate.
Because it seemed like something you would just know, just from being near someone, from being close enough to them, from being in the same space. Like their souls would attract like magnets or like water droplets traveling down a window, waiting to merge until the last moment when they realized they were on the same path, and then they’d become one.
Was that fate, Sirius wondered?
He realized Remus was staring back at him, his eyes puzzled and curious and warm.
