Summary
Rebellion and revenge have bloomed into war. England is torn between two Queen's - the Catholic Queen Mary, who has aligned herself with the Spanish and currently blooming with child and the Protestant Queen Elizabeth, who has forged a pack with the formidable Captain Kett of Norfolk.
Elizabeth might have the army, but London is a formidable city. Though Captain Robert Kett is a excellent tactician and fierce ally, he has recently been bruised by the revelation of his relationship with Matthew Shardlake - not only the man he loves, but the father of his only daughter out of wedlock. Despite the support of the Queen, their positions at the heart of the rebellion are hardly secure and there are sharks circling waiting to strike at both at the first sign of weakness.
Meanwhile, an evil lurks close by in the shadows, slipping through a village unseen, wreaking havoc and terror. Not too far from Warwick Castle, a killer lurks. Justice is about to be torn up at the roots and the country set afire with war. Which Queen will rise at the end? And who will be by her side when she does?

Summary
England is wounded. Kett's Rebellion, like so many others across the country has failed. The people are in despair and more downtrodden than ever. The Protector's Council prepares to try the leaders and execute them. In Norwich, Robert and William await their fate and their family returns to the city to be as near as they can and brace for what is to come.
Yet, though the fire is extinguished, the embers still burn. Rebels are still missing, including Captain Hector Johnson, who has found himself in the service of Lady Elizabeth Tudor as her Master of the Horse. Hugh Curteys and Natty advance on Norwich, determined to rescue Robert and William Kett and get them to safety. Down in London Matthew Shardlake prepares to go into hiding to conceal a secret that could see him burning at the stake if discovered and the death of all his friends.
All this simmering cauldron of discontent needs is a powder keg and it will explode. Rebellion is over, but revenge will be had.

Summary
Another take on history and Tombland, because Kett's Rebellion deserved better than the hand history dealt to them!
In a hellish backdrop where people are starving, angry and desperate, Robert Kett leads his people into an uprising against the enclosure commissions, wanting only to create better lives for the people of Norfolk. If he can only show the Protector they mean peace, they can succeed.
To that end, he hopes to persuade a lawyer named Matthew Shardlake to help try their imprisoned gentlemen and avoid a rush of vengeance. Matthew knows the world of court better than Robert does, however, and though he would like to see them succeed, he can only see disaster looming ahead. Despite all that, Robert and Matthew just cannot ignore that strange feeling drawing them closer and closer together.
Can Matthew save the ones he loves before it is too late?
Read the tags. Don't like it, don't read it. In this First Part of the story, we will be following Tombland, with some diversions. History takes detours in Part Two.
