Her features are striking—soft and girlish, with those wide blue eyes so like Niklaus’s, just a few shades darker, glistening with tears. Her mouth is red and swollen from where she has bitten it raw.
He feels something stir—pity first, protectiveness next, and beneath it the small, unspoken hunger that accompanies both. He buries it, as he has always done.
“Miriam,” he says at last, his tone even, measured. “I will speak with our mother. Perhaps she can turn Father’s mind. He listens to her more than he admits. But you must understand, sister, if father were to decree you marry tomorrow, you would marry tomorrow—”
Miriam eyes fill with a fresh wave of tears, her small shoulders shaking as she clings to Niklaus.
“It is hopeless then,” she says. “Mother will not help me—she never helps anyone. He says and she obeys.”
Niklaus’s voice cuts through, low and angry. “Brother, can we truly do nothing?”
Elijah exhales, the sound nearer a sigh than a breath—already a plan has already begun its slow, deliberate shape within him.
