This is the first fic I've ever written, and by no means can I guarantee that it will be good. I've read tons of amazing, beautiful, and heart-wrenching fics that I know I'll go back to time and time again, but no matter how great they were, I always thought I'd do something a little different. I'd resigned myself to being a forever reader, but never a writer, so really, the inspiration to write this was on a whim. Either way, I hope someone else can find a little pleasure in reading this. This fic was great on so many levels. Firstly, the thought of a Fem!John is SO appealing to me I wanted to cry in joy. Never knew I needed this until I had it. Secondly, the way Sherlock's gender crisis is so well written despite his mostly rational self while not being out of character. Feels much like myself even though I'm dysphoric for other reasons. And lastly can I just say HOW easy it was to read it? It was so smooth, no out-of-place information or confusing mid sentences. I've a lot to learn from this.
I loved this so much.

Summary
As someone who's acted, directed, and written, I have these profound doubts about anyone who tries to claim interpersonal relationships are mere fakes, taken on out of expedience and pretended to without investement. It's amazingly difficult to draw a clear line between that which you perform for the sake of utility and that which you perform for the sake of desire. The framework of a rehearsal space, of surrounding fellow cast-crew-direction, the mutual understanding of theater--all these provide a safety net in theater, and even then actors regularly find that what they pretend takes on a life of its own. Sherlock, to me, shows very little sign of understanding what it would mean to play an intimate role with an unknowing partner under private and prolonged conditions. Judging by his soft melancholy and his odd evasions during the break-up scene with Janine in the hospital, I honestly tend to think he got in deeper personally than he realised.
This, then, is a little tiny smidge of a scene, the night before John finds Sherlock in a crack house in "Vow." It can be seen as an extension to or sequel to "The Owl Looked Up."

John assumes they’re ramping up to a relationship, maybe they’ve even said as much, but once when John leaves early from a shift at the surgery, Sherlock is clearly in bed with another man. John is hurt and angry at being led on, and Sherlock is confused: he’d hired an escort because he didn’t know much about sex and he just wanted to be good for John before taking their relationship to the next level.
