Pope raises his eyebrows. “With his uncle, you mean?”
“Guys! Shut up!” John B steps in between them, finally pulling Kiara's focus away from Pope. He runs both hands through his already disheveled hair, making him look utterly exhausted. “If JJ told either of you he’s celebrating with his family, he’s lying, alright?”

There's something in the air this year that’s a little different though; it’ll hum faintly in the foreground of everything that they’ll do over the next few hours, haunting every hearty sip of eggnog, every off-key rendition of a carol, every shiny new decorative addition to the tree. It’s a sense that this is the very last Christmas where everything remains the same as it always has been, the tight knit web of the Pogues’ friendship, steady, constant and as of yet, unaltered.
Kiara almost feels like if she doesn’t grab the time with both hands then it’ll slip through her fingers like flour falling through a sieve or water evaporating in a cast-iron skillet.
