In the traditional "Beauty and the Beast" archetype, mimicked and adapted through a thousand different works, there is a pivotal moment when the damsel makes a deliberate choice to become the monster's prisoner, not knowing what that would mean. This story evolved from an attempt to explore that particular moment, to peel back the layers and reveal the fears and desires underneath.
