Summary
Matt finally makes a move on Kitty, only to be told she doesn't want to "make things weird" by being more than friends. However, she makes an offhand comment that there is someone who cares for him. He wracks his brain and can't think of what woman she is talking about. But he doesn't have too much time to think about it when Chester gets into trouble.

“Seventeen,” she said.

Summary
They say that a cat has nine lives, due to the fact that they tend to find their way out of trouble as often as they do. Perhaps the same is true for lawmen such as myself. Doc sometimes teases me, saying that because I’m so resilient, I must be part cat or something. By rights, I should have died a long time ago. Sure never expected to live as long as I have… I’ve come close to dying so many times, and yet, somehow, I’m still standing. These stories will give you an insight into my perspective on all the times when I’ve been shot, injured or ill. Serious or minor, something always keeps me going…

Summary
The first three bites are enthusiastic, a famished soldier eating his mother's pie for the first time after the war. But after that, he's full. He puts his spoon on his plate and rests his hands in his lap.
Doc has explained this: their stomachs shrunk from disuse. He can't eat more because he has nowhere to put it. But Matt can't give up so easily.
"C'mon, have a little more."
Six weeks after their return, Chester is home safe in Dodge. But when the beasts of memory, permanent debility, and fate itself threaten to snuff out his recovery, Matt and friends may be powerless to help him.

Summary
Chester faces Matt, whiter than a winter sky, eyes wide and glazed. Then, they narrow, troubled, like he's trying to remember something.
His next breath catches in his throat. His hand opens, fumbling, dropping the bucket of fish. It dumps over. The water splashes their boots, the dead fish sloshing along with it, the light glinting from their scales, as Chester's hand rises to his chest. Matt's gaze darts there where a scarlet patch blossoms in the front of his flannel, as he pats there blindly, like he can cover the bullet hole with his palm. His knee buckles, bad leg skewing out from under him.
Matt lunges forward to catch him. "Chester!" A hand flies to his back, where the bullet entered, and his front, pressing where it exited, holding him together as he eases him to the ground.
Gun thunder roars in his ears. As he cradles Chester's lean body between two broad hands, he doesn't think it will ever quiet again.
...
In which Chester is severely wounded, but Matt is the one who walks away with scars. -

Summary
"My name is Panacea. But people mostly call me Pan."
"Panacea," Kitty repeats aloud.
"Yes. Do you know what it means?" She shakes her head. "A panacea is a something that can cure a lot of things."
"You wear awful shiny clothes for a nurse, ma'am."
The woman chuckles. "Not that kind of cure, cher."
"What kind of cure?"
"You'll understand when you're older."
She's an angel. The grace to her movement, the drift to her step, the unyielding aura of justice tempered by mercy—more holy than any parson who has ever turned up his nose to a ragged orphan girl.
Panacea. A cure for all ills, or at least, for all of Kitty's.
...
A starving girl wanders into a gambling house from the streets of New Orleans in a country ravaged by civil unrest. Her new-found family fights to protect her, but ultimately, the only escape is a ticket west, to Dodge City, Kansas, a border state. She's a teenage whore clawing herself to the top of a dusty Kansas town. Her story answers the eternal question: What happens upstairs? -

Summary
Chester asks, "You figure we ourghta ask Miss Kitty what kind of trouble a little girl gets into with no kinfolks?"
Matt's stomach drops into the soles of his boots. Charity has lost so much. But she has so much more to lose. "What do you want us to do, then?"
He quiets for a second, and then he continues, "I'd just sleep a lot sounder, y'know, thinking about her, if'n we'd decided this is the best place for her. We're better equipped to take care of her than Godie, or them dried up old prairie widows."
Teeth grinding, Matt sweeps around for a retort. He doesn't like the idea. But, as much as he loathes to admit otherwise, some part of him knows Chester is right. "I'm not giving up on finding her somewhere to go." It doesn't sound particularly convincing when he says it. The expression on Chester's mouth, the pressed line losing its grimness, threatening to become a smile, betrays that he knows he won.
...
Matt accidentally acquires a daughter. It doesn't take him long to learn the veracity of an old proverb: It takes a village to raise a child.

Summary
Matt and Chester return from a fishing trip with a horrendously plain, droning murmur following them to Dodge City. Its consistency is maddening, stealing the brief pockets of silence from their lives they previously utilized as a respite from the people-chatter and clamor they’re usually up to their necks in. The roles are reversed as they find that any layer of noise louder than a hum smothers it, forced to become attuned to living life surrounded by constant hubbub or an audible version of uncanny valley haunting them every moment they’re alone.
Gritting it out they won’t stand for when faced with the idea of enduring it for the remainder of their lives, much less the next few months, so born of this desperate scrabble away from the omnipresent Hum they find foothold in the long, dreary process of halting it.

Summary
"Kansas," Matt repeats. It doesn't sound familiar. Slowly, he shakes his head. He doesn't know where he is or how he got here.
"Do you…" The stranger falters. Persevering, he brings himself to ask the question Matt fears: "Do you know who I am?"
How does he answer? His heart thrums steadily in his chest. This is someone he knows, someone he cares about, someone he doesn't want to hurt. He doesn't remember why. But why doesn't matter. His tongue trails over the front of his teeth. "I… I know you're my friend." His mouth feels tacky and dry. "I don't remember your name."
Hurt reflects in his eyes, caught somewhere between fear and concern. Wiping at his mouth with the back of his hand, he clears the drool from his cheek. "Well, I—" He breaks off, reconsidering. His hand bunches up in the blankets. "I'm Chester. 'Nd you's right. I'm your friend. You got plenty of friends here in Dodge."
A head injury robs Matt of his memory, making him an easy target for every gunslinger in the west. Chester takes him away to recover. But as their relationship blossoms in this new world, Matt finds himself with fewer tethers to the man he was before.

Summary
"Let me see." Chester balks. "I'm not going to take it from you." With a nod of reluctant assent, he surrenders the prosthesis to Matt.
His fear and silence sting. Somewhere, sometime, someone did take Chester's leg away from him in an act of cruel ridicule—the only reason he would pause before letting Matt examine it. Matt rolls the piece in his hands. The burnt leather strap dangles, torn. The biggest buckle is warped. His thumb trails along the jagged splinters of the thigh piece. It's missing a chunk nearly as broad as Matt's palm. "This is supposed to be smooth, ain't it? That's where it sits."
"Yessir." Chester wipes his mouth. Mud streaks down his face. "'S busted."
An altercation on the job damages Chester's prosthesis—shocking to his friends, who didn't know he's an amputee. While struggling with their relationship founded in dishonesty, Matt finds himself caught between the government and his loyalty to his friend in his quest to replace the mobility aid. The scaffolding is crumbling around them. Can they stand strong without it? Or will they walk away, once Chester can walk again?
