Summary
Since becoming Pokemon Master, Ash has decided to take a break from adventuring in order to take the time to reconnect with old companions. Now in Alola, staying with Professor Kukui and Professor Burnet, he finds the opportunity to reconnect with somebody he would last expect.
Serena's life of Pokemon Performances and coordination is turned around after she reconnects with Ash for the first time in years. She's back this year from Hoenn, aiming for title of Kalos Queen against the current queen, Aria. Although, it comes with the price of dealing with the corrupt and tough coordinator industry, Aria's internal mental fallout, and the lingering question of where her and Ash's relationship stands.
Together, they'll have to learn how to uncover unspoken truths as they meet a new version of each other in this new chapter of their lives.

There’s a few minutes of silence as Ash strokes Goh’s hair at a slow pace. Goh blinks slowly at the wall, basking in Ash’s comforting embrace. His breathing gets even at some point, and Ash thinks that Goh has already fallen asleep, but a quiet mumble proves him wrong.
“Tell me about it”.
Ash lets out a confused huh?.
“You said that the episode reminded you of that time too, so tell me about it”, Goh quietly explains, and Ash exhales a shaky breath.
It’s gonna be hard to talk about it. Ash is aware that Goh knows some bits of his inner turmoil when it comes to how he truly felt when he hid in Alola for almost a year, and it’s only gonna be fair if Ash will elaborate on it further since he knows every detail now of what Goh has felt during that time thanks to his diary he has read. But…where does he start?
“Maybe the day when we were supposed to go on our own journeys?”, Goh proposes, and that’s when Ash realizes he voiced out the question aloud.
So he does so. He takes a deep breath.
“Oh, that was…the worst day of my life".

It’s not like Kukui’s in bad health, it’s just that he's getting older. And for some reason that scares the hell out of Ash. The Masked Royal has been Ash’s hero for as long as he can remember. Him retiring is one thing, the devastating thought that one day Kukui won’t be there to catch him when he falls is another. It makes tears well up in his eyes, but he pushes them down.
He looks at the older man next to him, really looks at him. His hairs started to grey slightly, and there's lines on his face that haven’t always been there. His eyes are slightly more sunken, and his bun isn’t as neat as it used to be.
But that same warmth is still there. The softness of his gaze, a welcoming smile, they all remain. The thought that someday in the future, that warmth will no longer be there makes Ash’s chest feel tight.

Kukui's retiring as the Masked Royal, and Ash doesn't know how to feel about that.

“Please, calm down, you can trust us”, Ash calmly says, but Zoroark roars madly as he finally launches one of his attacks.
Goh’s eyes widen and he can hear Ash yell watch out, but he’s too close to the Pokemon and he doesn’t have enough time to run. From the corner of his eyes, he sees Ash catching up to him and trying to protectively hug him, but with his last amount of strength, Goh pushes Ash away and Zoroark hits him instead. Twice.
Goh screams hard from the pain as he falls down to the ground. The smoke from the impact surrounds him, which makes it harder for him to breathe. He abruptly starts to cough and he hisses in pain as it hurts his chest.
“Goh!”, Ash yells as he runs to his hurt partner, ignoring the smoke, and scoops him in his arms. “Shit, baby, it’s okay”, he says, holding Goh’s hand into his own.
