Summary
The Kingdom of Henrietta is threatened by war. To protect his homeland, Prince Gansey sets off with his loyal guard captain, Sir Ronan Lynch, in search of a fabled sword with the power to bring dreams to life. On the road, they encounter a tiny but annoyingly competent adventurer-for-hire, a (somewhat) helpful spirit, and the most irritating magician in the world. Their quest leads them to a number of unexpected discoveries, and Ronan’s love and loyalty will be tested to the limits.
This is a tale of magic and romance, betrayal and forgiveness, and above all, belief in the truth of that old adage: that dreams do, occasionally, come true.

“That might be my fault,” Ronan said morosely. “My brother thinks I don’t have a future. It could just be that there’s nothing to see.”or: it's the 1980s, and magic is real. ronan thinks he's the loneliest man in the world. then, he meets adam.

"This is it," Adam said, "Take it slow."
Ronan did, bringing them to a gentle halt several feet down the drive from them. The house was just as the forest had shown him, as were the children. Twins, a boy and a girl, eight years old though their eyes spoke of having seen too much to be judged by that number. Adam knew the look. He'd worn it. The boy had an angry bruise across his right cheek, his lip was split, and the girl's hair was bedraggled and half-torn from its ponytail. They clutched each other, suspicious narrowed eyes on the approaching adults. They were malnourished. They were terrified though they tried hard to hide it.
Ronan looked aside to Adam, forcing his eyes off of the kids, as they both paused in front of the BMW. He scowled. It was his surprised what-is-happening scowl. Adam was an expert in the many scowls of Ronan Lynch after all of these years.
He'll be a lot more surprised by the end of it, Adam thought.
(Or, the day that Adam and Ronan become parents.)

In Adam's silence, Maura reached across the table and squeezed his hand gently. He couldn't speak. Calla eyed him from the other end of the table with her trademark furrowed brow and Gwenllian continued to stare into her empty tea cup like she could see something at the bottom of it. Somewhere else in the farmhouse, Ronan and Opal were moving about but it felt like Adam's entire universe had shrank down into the space taken up by that one question.
"Yes," Adam whispered without meaning to, "I, I can feel the ley line but I didn't think it would be any more than that once Cabeswater was gone. I didn't think I could do anything."
"That's because you're an idiot, Coca-Cola shirt," Calla said, jabbing an accusing finger at him.

Adam Parrish has spent the last decade of his life at the Aglionby School for Boys, the latter five years as a teacher. At twenty-two, feet restless and mind yearning for more, he takes a position at The Barnes, a sprawling estate in Galway, as lush and green as the woods where he spent his childhood. His pupil is strange and her father, when finally he appears, stranger.
Adam has been poor and obscure all his life; he had hoped, with time, that he might resolve the first of these difficulties at least. What he had not planned for was the possibility of happiness, or its potential costs.
