Gyrus squeezes him tighter. Kodya can feel him sobbing.
Finally, he pulls back, sniffles, and says, “I – um.” Then he shakes himself, opens and closes his mouth a few times, and finally just shoves the piece of paper at Kodya.
It’s from King Masiosare. And it says –
“You’re getting married?” Kodya can barely force out the words. Has lost complete control of his face and his voice. Has no idea what he’s doing or saying. He thinks he might be shaking.
Of all the problems Kodya thought he was going to have when he woke up today, this wasn’t one of them. He hears a horrifying whooshing sound in his ears. Can’t fathom the idea of a castle without Gyrus. Of life without Gyrus. What would even be the point?

Summary
The butterfly effect is a funny thing.
For example, there's a timeline where Gyrus asks him to come to the ice realm and Kodya stays behind, leaving them both heartbroken. Gyrus spends the year moping and when Masiosare tells him Kodya’s in danger, he throws himself into it headfirst, shadowing half the Room of Swords and forcing Kodya to kill him, kicking off a truly epic series of events that spans years.
But in this timeline, Maria has to pee.
