Summary
In one of their most dangerous missions yet, the crew of the Cerritos faces the nightmarish synth attack at the Utopia Planetia shipyards, and the grim aftermath of helping rebuild the Federation from the wreckage - including dealing with the changes as it abandons some of its longest-held ideals. Mariner and Boimler have to adapt to the new status quo after Ransom makes his choice of First Officer, and they and their friends must adjust to their growing responsibilities in a Starfleet that's becoming unrecognizable.
Meanwhile, on the USS Burton, Lt. Nog's struggles for recognition and fair treatment seem to never end, thanks to the narrow-minded gaze of the Burton’s Chief Engineer and the ship's biased captain. As Nog grapples with alienation and his own waning faith in Starfleet, a chance meeting after the Mars disaster shakes up his dreary existence and presents a new opportunity - one that requires a risky change in direction.
Fortunately, he hasn’t forgotten the 62nd Rule of Acquisition: The riskier the road, the greater the profit.
