Summary
Tom had understood him like nobody else ever would. He had been there; he had dreamed of it over and over. He'd seen the limp, lifeless body Maverick tried desperately to cling to even as the medevacs pulled them apart. He'd stood there in the locker room, searching for something to say, even though there was nothing.
Tom might have even cared about him, once.
But Maverick knew better now.

Twelve years after kicking him out, Ice calls Maverick back to Top Gun one last time.

Summary
Both Jake and Bob gave up hope on ever really finding family, then they get taken in by Navy's Batman, or the closest thing to one, that there exist.
This isn't superhero au, just found family one with a lot of comic metaphors (that Maverick doesn't understand) because Jake and Bob are nerds in this.
Or just after Bradley leaves, Mav gets phone call that somehow ends up turning his world upside down once again.
(or IceMav end up raising foster kids Jake & Bobby after Bradley left AU)

Summary
Bob’s eyes snapped back open with a start.
Memories came crashing back, assaulting his already pounding brain—the briefing, the helicopter, the mission. Phoenix. Her voice clear in his headset and then suddenly cutting off. The radio malfunction. He remembered tapping the side of his comms in a panic, trying to reestablish the link. They were flying blind. Then the sudden tilt. The sky spinning. Alarms blaring.
He’d blacked out.
They’d crashed.
He had to find Phoenix.
***
Or, the Daggers were only supposed to be a team for one mission. When they're unexpectedly made into an official squadron, Bob learns what it's like to finally feel like he's home.

Summary
“Are you happy with yourself?” Nat asked. “You’ve made him into a circus attraction.”
“Kinda,” Rooster laughed, crossing his arms. “It's his fault for falling asleep out here. Hey, who's got a sharpie?”
“Okay–” Nat huffed, setting her hands on her hips.
“I'm kidding, I'm kidding!”
“Floyd!” she said, her voice loud and assertive, and Bob jerked awake immediately, knocking his book off of his lap.
“Huh?” he breathed, lifting his head off of the back of the armchair. Fanboy snatched Bob's wallet back from Harvard, tucking it under his leg hastily. Halo took a step back from where she was leaned over peering at his book, but she knocked her shin into the coffee table and swore. Rooster clasped his hands behind his back and tucked the twenties into his pocket, making his best attempt at a poker face, but he knew he was failing miserably. And Hangman, thank fuck, finally muted his stupid phone and looked up in earnest.
“That woke him up,” Payback said under his breath
“That'd wake any of us up,” Fanboy replied, nervously glancing at Nat. “Was she a drill sergeant in a past life?”
***
Or, five times the daggers wake Bob up, and one time they can't get him to sleep.

“New pair’s armed,” Jake breathed heavily through the static. “Jesus, one just rolled over my canopy!” Jake’s voice snapped again. “Coyote, visuals on both?”
“Affirmative,” came the reply. “They’re moving into attack position.”
“Hold position,” Maverick warned. “Do not engage unless you’re locked.”
Seconds stretched, taut as a wire.
“Missile lock!” Hangman snapped urgently. “I’m spiked—breaking!”
Or: Deployed to the South China Sea amid rising tensions, Bradley and Jake are juggling bad luck and hostile skies while trying to make time for their relationship.

Summary
Gaze wandering to the P-51 once again, drawn to the little plane like a moth to a flame. Pacing around it, putting a hand on it’s side.
“Well, aren’t you the prettiest damn thing, sweetheart?”
Because who was to know that Pete had started talking to the planes because Goose did? Emulating his brother in all but blood, taking confidence in a somewhat odd habit through the ensuing years.
Not noticing the tacky red fingerprints he left on the yellow paint as he hummed a nameless tune, pacing the plane’s perimeter, gauging what whoever owned the plane was up to. Peering into the opened belly of the plane to see the parts missing from the engine, standing on his tiptoes to see from another angle.
Only to be startled by the sound of something shattering behind him.

Summary
A word that everyone would happily use to describe Pete “Maverick” Mitchell was “unpredictable”. Now, “dangerous” naturally came in close second, but the danger comes from being unpredictable. So it wasn’t a surprise when it was revealed that even his heats would be unpredictable too.
His heats never had a definitive schedule ever since he presented. It would present at random. Mav had to take suppressants every day because being an omega while dreaming of being in the military was a death sentence and was also a subject of ridicule. So, Mav was glad that due to him bouncing from one family to the next—and the shit foster system—his real secondary gender was not known to the public.
They only knew that “Pete Mitchell” was a beta who was very sensitive to smell. For years, Mav was able to keep it under wraps.
But there were three times when his unfortunate heat breaks through.
