Thomas is a socialite and a model, perpetually single after a string of bad relationships and his friends are sick of his hopelessness when it comes to men. As his thirtieth birthday approaches, one of them (Celebrity Manager, Esther Finch) decides to take matters into her own hands and gets him a Companion.
Wouldn't it be funny if she changed all of his settings to conflict with Thomas' personality? She certainly thinks so.
When Thomas is gifted Edwin on his birthday, he is confronted with two things: 1) Clearly, none of his ex-partners ever actually loved him if this was how it was supposed to be, and 2) He might need better friends.

Have you ever experienced the sheer joy and pure feeling that even the most neutral of accidental contacts causes when you finally realise how much time it really had passed since you had last felt someone close to you? Have you ever felt so grateful for something as small as a nudge on the elbow that you thought you could just cry?
If you have, you can understand Charles, incorporeal for three decades, walking down to hell, risking the rest of his immortal afterlife, but unable to think about anything but touching. And you can understand Edwin, bleeding, tortured, faced with the complete injustice of the universe in front of the innocent boy that was his murderer, but still unable to avoid halting the conversation to stare at his reflection, touching his own face, his lips, his hair.(Ghosts can't feel. They can be injured, they know when they are in contact with an object, but they don't have a body anymore, That is, if they don't go to Hell.)
