Listen, Pearl was just being a good friend. She couldn't just let Eight be homeless! She took Marina in, three years ago, why wouldn't she do the same for Eight? And well, she was old enough to adopt now, and it would make creating documentation for her so much easier than it was with Marina, so it was just more efficient to adopt the girl!
And, well, if Eight kept having nightmares, and needed someone to teach her Inklish, and Pearl's house was quieter than Marina's city apartment, there was no reason she shouldn't stay with Pearl!
...Pearl wishes Marina would stop looking at her like that. Eight was just a friend.
Pearl adopted Eight. Somehow she never realised that she would actually come to see the teenager as hers, though.

Usually, this would mean a week off from work for most folk who don't do well in water. Captain Triple wouldn't mind a week off. A week in the bed or on the couch of the room they were staying in inside Splatsville. A week alone like most others besides the sparse missions with the new Agent 3 or the shared moments with strangers in the shops and trains that they tried so hard to avoid. A week where they remember not that long ago how nice things were with their closest friends.

“We were thinking,” Pearl continued, leaning toward them slightly, “that maybe it’s time for us to bring someone else into the family. We… we’re ready to have another child.

Eight had finally seen the surface she had yearned for and was ready to start a new life.
But, despite everything she had gone through with all who have been kind enough to help her… a certain Inkling that she so desperately wanted to interact with was giving her mixed signals.

A story that takes place after the Octo Expansion where Pearl and Marina take Agent Eight in and she does her best to connect with Agent Three. Agent Three also learns to accept help from others, especially concerning her new sanitization injuries.
