The shrines of Musutafu have an odd quality to them. There is a dog that comes and goes from the gates in the dead of night. Some say it’s as large as a person, even on all fours, but others claim it’s no bigger than a child. There is even a rumor that it is no dog at all.
On occasion, visitors will catch a glimpse of matted green hair curled around the back of statues, before it darts away from the light.
The locals have taken to calling it Komainu; shrine-dog.
