Summary
John isn't quite sure of his role in the new and fragile team he's ended up with after getting used to being assigned one all these years as a soldier and a shadow operative.
Everyone else seems to fall into some designation or other—leader, strategist, moral compass, father figure, muscle—all of them pieces falling in a puzzle that John can't seem to fill because the others fit better, and the thought slowly pushes him into a frustrated despair.
John spirals, becoming one with the sofa. He doesn't know that something else is wrong with him. Something darker and more sinister.

John wakes up in a cold sweat, drawing deep, labored breaths, feeling like his chest is about to cave in.
His bloodshot eyes focus, and with it, the chilling realization.
A sinister shape, pitch black, is straddling him, a figure so utterly devoid of light that it's silhouetted by the already dark background that is his room.
It only takes a second for him to catch on. He's seen this figure before, hovering above New York the day Bob transformed into Sentry.
"You show such willfulness, John Walker, clinging to your own darkness for so long."

Bob rapidly looked away, before his brain could form any thoughts about the man's muscles and the sounds emitting from his throat. "I can't wait to get out of these fucking clothes." John's hoarse voice started Bob, who still refused to stop staring at the closed elevator doors. Did he really have to say it like that? Bob's discomfort had temporarily hijacked his thoughts, keeping them away from filthier matter, and now John had made his breath falter without even meaning to. Because he never meant to do that, to turn Bob into a reluctant, embarrassingly horny mess."
An undercover investigation in a gay club forces the thick, growing tension between Bob and John to violently collapse. Their differences regarding love and sex should only pull them apart, so why can't they put out their desire?

Alina worries about how much he depends on her and how she starts to care for him. The closer he gets to her, the harder it is to tell whether she's helping him stay in control or feeding more power to the void inside him.

But it makes him think—there’s a Bob out there that was comfortable being taken care of like a kid by the Avengers for a week. How different was he from that Bob?

Bob had never really been much of an outdoorsy guy.
He liked a good couch, preferably one where the springs weren’t breaking through ancient layers of foam and fabric to dig into his back. Liked the rumble of an air conditioner, the twirl of a ceiling fan. Liked sitting against his attic window when it rained and watching the drops race each other down the pane. Being inside gave him little bits of control, even when his life was at its worst within those four walls. The most outdoorsy he had ever been would probably be when he was in less than stellar condition. Homeless, sleeping out of his car or on park benches after it got totaled, and then his stint of backpacking through Asia while bug-bitten to high heaven. There were no stickers on his water bottle in some flowing script that declared the mountains are calling and there probably never would be.

Bob kept his mouth on John’s neck, just kissing him, sucking on him, breathing against him, until John said suddenly, “You know, sometimes I wonder if Sentry made you a vampire.”
And then he realized just how long he’d had his mouth on John’s neck, how it must have crossed the line from sexy into weird. He pulled away, wiped his mouth on the back of his hand. It was stupid of him to leave hickeys when the rest of the team didn’t know. It was weird of him to suck on John’s neck for so long even though his skin was so textured and so interesting and so comforting.
“Hey.” John nudged Bob’s chin up with one hand when he stopped. Their eyes met for just a moment before Bob looked away, too embarrassed to maintain the contact. John pushed his fingers in Bob’s hair and twisted gently, tenderly. “You okay?”
Bob has a strange relationship with his mouth that nobody understands, including himself. Except for John, who somehow sees everything.
