Summary
It was opening night jitters. Parker knew what that meant, like when people got the flutters right before a job – it happened to good dependable people, it could happen to anybody. That was what Parker was here for, and he thought he’d see the season through. Grofield wouldn’t ask for it, and he wouldn’t offer. It would just happen.
“It’ll look good,” Parker said, “when you’ve got the actors on there, it’ll look good.”
He put a hand on Grofield’s shoulder. He’d stayed because he’d wanted to, was the truth. His wants used to be simple.

Summary
He’d brought Grofield in on this one though, so he was responsible for him. Parker had spent the better part of this last year in Mead Grove and money was running out, it was the main reason he’d walked into a job that was no good and he’d told himself he could make it into something workable twice now.

Summary
The job was sour. Parker had known that from the moment he’d had to start shooting; not aiming, just shooting over a shoulder and running and pulling Grofield along when he’d stood there frozen a second too long. The plans had been rotten – outdated or something. Parker hated buying packages from old men who’d lost track of how the job was done, but Handy had come in and said it was an easy one and Joe had okayed the whole thing so all they needed was a third man.
He shoved Grofield in the backseat and climbed up front with Handy, and they were speeding down the street before the security guard even made it to the door. It was a good jewelry store in a good neighborhood and the finger had been a salesman bitter with early retirement, he’d told Handy’s man the whole set-up and that had been that.

Summary
When he felt the hand on his knee, Parker startled – a brief tremor through his body. He was big and tough-looking, with broad shoulders and a narrow waist and big hands meant for hard labor. He knew what he looked like, and it wasn’t the kind of man who jumped at a hand on his leg.
“Yeah?” Grofield said when Parker glanced at him, a smile tugging at the corner of his lips. He looked good, relaxed. He was in his element, Parker realized.

Summary
Parker was quiet. On average, Parker was quiet. He spoke in a monotone that Grofield had learned to interpret, and sometimes his words came softer when it was just the two of them in bed under the covers but the variations on Parker’s voice were few and far between. He was a quiet, measured man. Grofield got loud though. Back when women had still been in the picture, he’d given them a run for their money. He was loud, he enjoyed it. Grofield distantly knew what he sounded like when he got close – his voice getting higher and higher, begging for it, embarrassing himself. But it was rare, though getting increasingly less so, that Parker got like this. His voice was deeper than Grofield’s. It was something else entirely.

Summary
They took the subway back to Parker’s hotel, their knees pressed together on the ride over and neither said a word. A year ago, they’d gone see a musical on Broadway and Grofield remembered some of the stops, he thought it might have been the same hotel. It had surprised him then, that a guy like Parker would humor him like that, but somewhere in the back of his mind Grofield had known for years that there were no guys like Parker. He existed in the singular.

Summary
It was the pinprick of humiliation that did it, Grofield standing there with armfuls of Shakespearean clothing while his wife hauled him over the coals in full view of the actors on stage. He’d said some choice words and left, and he’d driven two hours to the airport before he knew what he was doing.
Calling Parker from the phone booth in the parking lot, Grofield thought about those choice words and knew they weren’t very good ones. He wasn’t impressed with his performance. What he should have said was he saved my life! because that justified it all, but Grofield didn’t want to justify it. Not to Mary, not to anybody else.

Summary
It was that big lean body that did it; the wide shoulders tapering off to a narrow waist, the big thick hands Grofield had committed to memory that first afternoon four years ago. Not a stranger then, but Parker with a stranger’s face.
Grofield couldn’t look away. It was the stuff of fiction, but it looked good – real. The new face went with the rest of him. When he was close enough, Grofield said, “hey, stranger, I’m looking for a friend of mine. He’s about your height and–”
“Hello, Grofield.”

Summary
Awareness came in slow, and he didn’t dare turn his head. The hand he’d know anywhere, but it was still a hand. If that wasn’t Parker’s soft snoring in his ear, Grofield didn’t know what he’d do. The decision was made for him when that big warm body turned in its sleep; and with the leg thrown over his and the arm around his middle, Grofield knew. It had been six years, and he knew.
(With Parker back in Grofield's life, a world of possibilities opens before him.)

Summary
“We were working together.”
It meant more than it had in Mexico, Parker meant more by it and he hadn’t known himself until he was holding a little white box by Ted Shevelly’s rapidly cooling body and feeling suddenly grounded with the knowledge that he’d have torn the town apart twice over if it meant getting Grofield back. He knew that cold anger, and it had served him well.
(After Butcher's Moon, Grofield spends two weeks recovering in a motel. Parker takes care of him.)

Summary
“When the theater had gone under, Grofield had smiled and told the guy from the bank it was time for a change anyway. That was a year ago, and Grofield smiled a lot less and he knew a change was what he'd been undergoing for about six years – ever since Parker had taken a dive into the ocean, and Mary had packed her bags.”

Summary
Ordinarily, he wouldn't have given it a second thought. Left to his own devices, Parker would've laid down with the curtains closed, his mind empty like a machine at rest. Empty except for the thrumming in his veins telling him he ought to find himself a woman when he made it back to the States, as if the adrenaline of the job had no outlet without the routine.
But Grofield made him think. Always, inevitably, Grofield made him think. Like he was part of the job, and not a player in it.
(Set immediately after The Handle.)
