Summary
Seonghwa always knew that his life was going to be hard. It was as plain for him to see as his own hands in front of him, but he wanted to try to live his life looking towards the sun.
His uncle made that hard. Whenever the stress of life became too much for him, his uncle would berate Seonghwa over it, blaming it on his father for bringing his mother into their lives, on him being too much like his mother. It always came back to his mother.
Because Seonghwa’s mother was a harpy.
When he was 12, his uncle had a debt to a pirate captain from a job that went very poorly because of him.
And Seonghwa was how he settled that debt. Seonghwa, to spare his uncle.

Summary
It’s two humans fighting now under the glaring spotlights. They’re fit enough and desperate, average height but with enough determination to feed themselves to hit like they’re taking on a giant. It makes their hits wild and unreliable. Sweat and spit cover skin and stone. Blood on knuckles and teeth.
His spectating goes unnoticed, drowned in jeers and cheers and bone against bone. The violence draws the crowd in, salacious and visceral, and the crowd lets loose its money for a taste. He gets it, in a way. It draws him in too for his own reasons.
He had given up much more than money for a taste.
