IV isn’t an idiot. He knows that if he wants to end up on the right side of the war when it ends, it’ll be with their help—both with their contributions that will give the Jaegers and their pilots an advantage and with the heft their word could mean to him within the scope of the PPDC. He doesn’t want to be tried for war crimes after this is all said and done, after all.
IV doesn’t believe in a higher power—an alien power, sure, as the evidence surfaces and rends and tears and falls right before his eyes.
Still, it feels a little like divine providence when an intact secondary brainstem all but falls into his lap after the attack in Sydney.

For about a minute upon waking, Hermann had no idea where he was. The room was dark, and he was lying down. He had no idea where Newt was, either, which sent him into a few seconds of heart-stopping panic. As his bodily awareness increased, that faded.
The warm presence next to Hermann was also sprawled half on top of him, cutting off circulation in his left arm and leg. At some points of contact, there was no clothing in the way. He and his bedfellow were tangled in the covers. Strangely, that was no cause for alarm.
I’ll be damned, Hermann thought, cracking an eye open. Who needs scotch to demolish inhibitions when drifting will do in a pinch?
“Hey, g’morning,” Newt mumbled, his head pleasantly heavy on Hermann’s left shoulder. “Does this mean we’re a thing now?”
Hermann sighed, rubbing his raspy jaw. “Yes, Newton,” he conceded, flexing his stiff left hand on Newt’s shoulder. “We’re a thing.”
